SB 905 allows bars in certain cities to extend their alcohol sale hours to 4 a.m. Instead of having a uniform closing time for all bars in California, the bill will let some establishments stay open later than others, which may encourage people to drive from city to city looking for more drinks. This will likely increase the number of drunk driving accidents across the state. SB 905 has passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee and is awaiting a full Assembly vote.

San Marcos, Texas passed a bill extending bar closing hours until 2 a.m. in an effort to reduce drunk driving and other alcohol-related issues. However, the result was just the opposite. The law intensified the problem, leading to an increase in public intoxication incidents and more drunk driving traffic accidents.
The research shows that extending bar closing times will most likely cause a greater number of drunk driving accidents, putting everyone on the road at risk. Making all bar closing times across the state uniform could help discourage drinking and driving.
