Distracted Driving is a Growing Problem Among California Drivers

Distracted driving is an increasingly deadly issue drivers face in California, and across the entire country. According to the State of California, more than 54 percent of drivers who responded to a survey said that they were involved in a near-accident or an accident caused by someone who was distracted by their cellphone.

While cellphones aren’t the only cause of distracted driving, they are by far the most common cause. In the State’s report, they also noted that almost 40 percent of drivers surveyed admitted to making a mistake on the road while using their cell phone, while more than 44 percent said that texting behind the wheel is the most dangerous distraction for drivers on the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a report (PDF) on their study of distracted driving statistics from 2015, and found that 3,477 people were killed by distracted drivers that year alone, making up almost 10 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities. In addition, distracted drivers killed 551 cyclists and pedestrians, and caused approximately 391,000 serious injuries in 2015.
