5-Mile Stretch of I-5 in Sacramento is One of State’s Deadliest

The stretch of the I-5 in Sacramento that runs between Del Paso Road and Railyards Boulevard is approximately five miles in length. Yet those five miles are one of the deadliest highway strips in all of California, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Based on the agency’s information, there were 16 traffic fatalities in that short section of highway within just three years, from 2017 to 2019. It did not readily disclose how many nonfatal car accidents happened in that same time period, but it is assumed to be many more.Many locals recognize the part of the highway immediately when brought up in conversation because it has a reputation for its dangers. Intoxicated, speeding, and distracted drivers are a common sight along the I-5, especially between Del Paso and Railyards. In fact, crash data suggests that one of four fatal accidents in Sacramento County happen because of a drunk driver.A spokesperson from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) suggested that this stretch of the highway might be more prone to catastrophic car accidents because of its design and what drivers use it the most often. This part of the I-5 is a straightaway that exits the heart of the city, going northward. The lack of curvature can tempt some drivers to speed. Meanwhile, any commercial trucks that need to haul freight north or south are almost guaranteed to use the I-5 to get the job done. The combination between reckless drivers and an abundance of big rigs can be deadly.With the holiday season starting soon with Halloween, there will likely be an increase to this already-busy stretch of the I-5.
